Save the Canadian Music Industry

Earlier this month, the federal government announced a $20-million cut to two significant Music Arts programs: the DFAIT administered program PromArt (Promotional Arts), and the Department of Canadian Heritage administered program Trade Routes. These cuts are currently set to become effective on March 31, 2009.

Without funding, our country's music industry is headed for essential extinction. Talent will continue to leave Canada, and international artists will not come here to record... To add salt to the wound, this is following a terrible pattern of cuts to Canadian Arts that the federal government has made over the past several years.

If you need extra motivation, our own government's statistics show that communities which are devoid of, or weak in, support for artistic expression are often also low in terms of quality of life. Those areas are affected by higher rates of crime, depression, poverty and death... Imagine Canada in general being so bleak.

Whether you are a musician or not, if you care about Canadian music please take the time to read about this issue and to sign the petition below.

WHAT!!! Why are they cutting funding???
They've been cutting funding to the Arts for years in a series of waves. This is just a continuing part of that. Stephen Harper says that our country is facing a financial crisis. I think if we are, that's a good reason to continue with the investigations into the Conservative party's spenditure and policies over the past number of years that they have been in power.

Harper can try to dodge that ball and divert our attention to an election, but he's not fooling anyone.
